5th Grade Science

Ms. Albritton’s 5th Grade Science classes are beginning a new science unit that follows the NC Essential Science Standard (5.L.1–Structures and Functions of Living Organisms which 5.L.1.2 focus directly on comparing the major systems of the human body).

In this unit scholars investigate the basic structural systems of his or her body, which includes the nervous, skeletal, circulatory, and respiratory systems.  Scholars learn how these systems work together to provide structure, movement and coordination. This is an exciting unit for scholars. Over the next 4–6 weeks they will engage in thoughtful investigations exploring bones, building skeletons, making models, and testing their responses to sensory stimuli.

This week scholars have reviewed the nervous system (brain, nerves and spinal cord).  They are learning the structures by participating in activities including: a full body tracing activity, and the creation of a detailed labeled brain hat. Scholars also made model nerves, intertwining and connecting them to other team models to show how “messages” can be transmitted throughout the body.
